Carpet structures

Tufted carpets can be categorised into several structure types based on their construction.

Cut pile

Cut pile carpets are created by cutting, or shearing, the loops of the tufted carpet fibres, resulting in a soft and dense surface. Texture variations of cut piles include:

Velvet carpets have an even and smooth surface with an elegant, upright finish. Perfect for intimate settings with low traffic.

Saxony carpets are similar to velvet cut pile constructions, but have a slightly longer pile and a more textured appearance. A defining characteristic of a saxony is the pointed effect where the ends of the piles are clearly distinguishable. Works well in various low-traffic settings.

Frieze carpets feature twisted fibres that curl in different directions, for a more textured look that minimises footprints. Suitable for high-traffic areas.

Shag carpets are similar to frieze, but with a longer pile and deeper texture for a fun and casual look. Ideal for cosy environments.

Loop pile

Loop pile carpets are made by leaving the carpet fibres in their looped form. This construction creates a more durable and textured surface. Variations of loop piles include:

With a level loop pile carpet, all loops are the same height, creating a uniform surface. Perfect for high-traffic areas.

With a multi-level loop pile carpet, the loops vary in height. This creates a more varied, informal appearance with interesting textural contrasts.

A Berber loop pile its signature look comes from its flecks of colour and textured appearance. It is named after the tribes of Africa and Asia who first developed the technique.

Cut and loop pile

This style of carpet combines both cut and loop piles of different heights to create a sculptured effect. Variations of cut and loop piles include:

Tip-sheared carpets are made by tufting some loops higher than others and then cutting the high loops, leaving the lower ones uncut. The result is a textured, patterned finish that hides footprints and dirt.

Random-sheared carpets are similar to tip-sheared carpets, except that the yarn loops are cut in a random pattern, creating a more organic and textured effect.

Flatweave

Flatweave carpets have a flat pile and more textured profile that is perfect for high-traffic areas in homes and offices. The striking patterns of flatweave carpets make them ideal for stair runners.

Non-woven

Non-woven carpets are made by bonding fibres together using heat or pressure, rather than weaving them together. At Belysse, we distribute needle-punched non-woven carpets which are made of polyester or polypropylene fibres.
